Oligarchs like Ayala benefiting from Marcos’ land use conversion, fake land reform policies

Ayala Land Inc. (ALI) is investing Php18 billion to develop Crescendo in Tarlac, the real estate giant’s 29th estate so far. ALI acquired the land through collaboration with the Cojuangco family and Lorenzo-owned companies.

To pave way for what is dubbed as the “new downtown” in Tarlac, Ayala Land Inc began demolishing homes in Sitio Obrero, Barangay Central, displacing hundreds of families. The 290-hectare area is being developed to become a masterplanned modern community with commercial and residential purposes.

On August 12, 2024, demolition teams razed eight homes without proper notice or documentation, sparking protests. The lack of adequate notice and consultation has fueled resentment and further exposed the broken promises of land reform.

Crescendo is located past the Hacienda Luisita Exit of the SCTEX and MacArthur Highway and future Central Luzon Link Expressway or CLLEX.

Inigo Zobel of the Ayala olirgarchs clan is a known close friend of Bongbong Marcos. In 2023, Marcos Jr and Ayala Corp. inaugurated the biggest wind farm in the country worth P11-billion
While Marcos is posturing that he is fulfilling the “land reform promise” his policies and pro-investor stance worsens landlessness and food insecurity.
